So picture this: a friend of a friend calls you up and asks if you can host someone from a foreign country for the night. They don't speak your language and you will need to feed them and provide a bed for them and entertain them for a few hours. Would you be open to that??
That is basically what home stays are like. All of our other teammates had met their hosts previous to the 'sleepover' but Mary and I had not. We were picked up at a soccer field in town by two complete strangers [men!] on motorbikes and taken away to our home stay. We were very grateful to be together for this adventure!
Now, this would probably be a good time to state that I do a LOT of things on these Global trips that I would NEVER do in the U.S. Never. But - as they say - when in Rome. Or Kathmandu. Oh, and we do a LOT of praying on these trips.
Our home stay was awkward and great. I am really glad that I did it. Talk about stepping out of your comfort zone. These gracious people opened their home to us. They fed us fantastic food. They gave us their bed and they all slept together on a twin mattress. The husband, Govinda, spoke great English so we were able to communicate surprisingly well. Sujita, the wife, cooked for us and seemed very concerned about our comfort.
Don't we look so tired??? We were!
